The Fall Guy

A review by Jake Forrest (team member based at The Light Stockport)

The ultimate summer blockbuster: The Fall Guy has finally arrived!

Whether you’re an action fanatic, a lover of romance or just love a comedy that’ll leave you laughing out the screen, David Leitch’s latest film has something for everyone!

Inspired by the hit 1980s TV series of the same name, this modern reimagining follows stunt actor Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) after suffering a near-fatal accident on a movie set.

After returning to work, Colt is tasked with tracking down Hollywood star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) ), who mysteriously vanishes during filming, all while reconciling with his director and former flame, Jody (Emily Blunt).

Director David Leitch - known for directing action-packed films such as John Wick, Bullet Train and Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw - continues to bring all the drama and high-stakes action to the big screen. A homage to the often overlooked talents of the stunt performers, with jaw-dropping action sequences and incredible practical effects, including an epic street race showdown, an explosive boat battle and a heart-stopping helicopter leap. However these moments wouldn't be as impressive if they didn’t go hand in hand with an excellent story. Leitch once again combines adrenaline-pumping action with a compelling story to create a film that leaves a lasting impact.

A star-studded cast sees Barbenheimer rivals Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt leading the charge. Gosling keeps the laughs coming following his Oscar-nominated turn as Ken in Barbie, layering heartfelt and comical moments to create a character that will capture audience's hearts. Emily Blunt is superb, elevating her character beyond the traditional protagonist love interest. Their on-screen chemistry is undeniable, as we navigate the complexities of their characters' relationship in a refreshingly meta manner. Supporting performances from Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham as the flamboyant film producer Gail and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the entitled Hollywood star Tom Ryder add to the knockout cast.

With tonnes of heart, passion and energy bursting onto the screen, The Fall Guy is a true passion project and brilliant homage to the insanely talented, yet underappreciated stunt performers. Make sure you stick around after the credits for a hilarious post-credits scene that is both satisfying and a brilliant conclusion to the story.

The Fall Guy jumps into action at The Light on Thursday, 2nd May. See you there!
